TOKYO — Zipair Tokyo Inc., a low-cost provider owned by Japan Airways Co., has begun promoting in-flight meals made with cricket powder.


That is the primary time a Japanese home airline has adopted insect-based meals for in-flight meals. Edible crickets are attracting consideration as an environmentally pleasant meals, and the corporate hopes that environment-conscious clients will need to dig into the brand new choices.


Zipair developed the meals — a tomato chili burger and “pescatore” seafood pasta — in cooperation with Naruto, Tokushima Prefecture-based Gryllus Inc., a enterprise agency that emerged from Tokushima College and that researches cricket-derived meals. In-flight catering firm chef Keita Masuda, who developed the meals, stated of the cricket powder’s enchantment, “The powder has a shrimpy style and nutty aroma, and utilizing it expands the meals’s umami taste.”
