If there’s one factor your grandmother most definitely knew, it was that cabbage + soup = yumminess. Many cultures the world over put together cabbage soup — from the well-known Russian, Ukrainian, and Polish borscht (through Encyclopedia Britannica) to Italian zuppa di cavolo, that includes little greater than cabbage, stale bread, and wealthy hen inventory (through Delicious Magazine).

So the following time you are craving a deep, heat bowl of soup, do as your grandma did and go for cabbage. This old school preparation begins with a fast sauté of hearty root veggies together with potatoes and carrots, then provides chopped cabbage, canned tomatoes, and hen broth. After simmering for about 30 to 40 minutes till all of the greens are tender, the soup is able to be garnished with chopped parsley and loved.
