Welcome to September – and, extra importantly, Nationwide Gyro Day! Hailed yearly Sept. 1, this scrumptious foodie vacation celebrates the savory Greek pita sandwich made with lamb, beef, pork or hen and topped with crisp contemporary veggies, tangy feta and refreshing tzatziki sauce.

Historically cooked on a vertical spit, the meat roasts in entrance of a heating factor because it slowly spins. ½ teaspoon paprika

½ teaspoon cumin

¼ teaspoon pepper

For the tzatziki:

1 English cucumber, unpeeled, seeded and finely diced

Kosher salt

2 cups plain Greek yogurt, full fats

2 tablespoons olive oil

2 cloves garlic, minced

½ lemon, juiced

Recent cracked pepper

⅓ cup contemporary dill, chopped

For serving, toppings are non-obligatory:

4-6 pita breads

Tomato slices

Cucumber slices

Purple onion, thinly sliced

Crumbled feta cheese

Pepperoncinis

Shredded lettuce

Kalamata olives
